Real Renewal Strategy Meeting

March 11, 2008

Present: Susanne Arndt, Florence Stratton, Amy Petrovich, Leif Kaldor, Larry Elliott, Guy Marsden, Carla Beck, Joanne Havelock, Phil Jeffreys, Rene Dumont, Bill Treneman, Trish Elliott.

  1. Call to order. 7:10 p.m. Dumont in chair.

  1. Agenda – Approved

  1. Topics for discussion

A. Renewal Plan

Information

·         Bill reported that 2 highschools (1 public, 1 separate) and one elementary school are planned for the southeast development.

·         There is pressure in the northwest to rebuild Braun or develop a new school.

·         Individual trustees have reported that the vote on Nov. 29 meant they approved the plan prior to the consultation period. There appears to be a contradiction in their consultation plan as it was described to the public and RealRenewal.

Action

·         Obtain copies of Nov. 29 minutes (Trish).

·         Guage support in North Central for continued Herchmer action (Carla and Joanne).

·          Seek stronger answers to questions to board, such as when they will consult with Heritage Regina (Trish).

·         Contact David Suzuki Foundation.

·         Larry planning to work on school board report card.

·         Track zoning bylaws to follow new builds of schools.

B. Education Act

Information

·         Carla has spoken with the Minister’s office about a future meeting.

Action

·         Bombard the Minister’s office with emails and letters demanding equal treatment as rural schools under Education Act reform (everyone).

·         Do a comparison between our current rules and the Ontario guidelines.

C. Usher campaign

Information

·         There is a drive to switch taxes over to the separate system.

·         Question – Can people still vote public?

·         Planning meeting tomorrow night

·         Letters were sent to the 10 developers in the area, but no reply.

Action

·         Wait to find out what people want to do at the planning meeting, and support whatever action arises.

D. Election

Information

·         Edward Knopf has a copy of an economic paper that was presented to the board; it states that the bottom line is fear of the separate system.

·         Guy looked at results of the last election. There appear to be some vulnerable seats. Gary Schenher won by just 30 votes over Angela Fraser. Dale West won by about 200 over Robert Petry. Barb Saylor was acclaimed.

Action

·         Develop a public education campaign on the importance of neighbourhood schools.

Focus on key trustee subdivisions.

·         Contact the parent council at Dieppe (key subdivision, school closure planned).

·         Form a non-profit for fundraising purposes (Michael Plante suggested for this task).

·         Hold a fundraising concert (Rene)

·         Hold a public forum on schools

·         Use Herchmer and Usher as locations for events

·         Stay in the media

·         Mount a campaign to have Connaught and Davin removed from the closure list next spring.

  1. Adjournment. 8:40 p.m.

Next Meeting: March 31, 2008. 7 p.m.
